What’s Needed to Start Training

Licence

You need a full car driving licence before you can begin training as a lorry driver. It must be valid at the time training begins and remain valid throughout the entire course.

You need to complete and receive D2 (provisional licence) and D4 forms (Medical) before commencement of any training. Once completed the forms must be sent to the DVLA Swansea with your driving licence, this should take about 3 weeks, be sure that you have been granted the provisional entitlement that you have applied for.

Medical

Before you start training you will be required to pass a routine medical. You do not need to be perfectly healthy, but your health needs to be reasonable to get a doctor’s clearance. Upon completion of your health exam, your doctor will submit the necessary paperwork for you.

D4 Medical Form

Green Pass Training will book the medical for you within 7 – 10 days.

Module 1 – Theory Test

  • Theory Test (Multiple-Choice)

  • The multiple-choice questions part lasts for 1 hour and 55 minutes, and the pass mark is 85 out of 100 questions.

  • Theory Test (Hazard Perception)

There are 19 videos and 20 developing hazards to spot. The pass mark is 67 out of 100. Review and amendment of answers once completed is not allowed.

HGV Theory Test Result

On completion of the theory test, a letter will be given to you at the test centre with the results for the part of the theory test undertaken. When both parts have been successfully completed, the theory test certificate will be posted to you. You will need this when you book your Driver CPC part 3 driving test. Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from when you passed the first part of the test.
These tests can be taken together or separately, but you must pass both parts to receive a Theory Test Certificate. If both tests are taken together and one is failed, you only need to retake the failed part!

Module 2 – Case Study

The test is made up of 7 case studies you work through on a computer. The case studies are short stories based on situations that you’re likely to experience in your working life. You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study.

The test lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the pass mark is 40 out of 50.

Module 3a – Off-road Exercises

The off-road exercises will include:

  • An ‘S’ shaped reverse into a bay

  • (C+E) Vehicle coupling & uncoupling

Module 3b -Practical On-road Driving

Before your driving test you will be asked a series of questions. ‘Show Me Tell me” – Read More

During your practical On-road driving, the examiner will check how you:

  • use the vehicle controls

  • move away at an angle, uphill and downhill

  • do a controlled stop

  • use the mirrors

  • give appropriate signals

  • off-road exercises

  • manage your progress and control your vehicle speed

  • deal with hazards

  • select a safe place to stop

There will also be 10 minutes of independent driving, designed to test your ability to drive safely whilst making independent decisions.

During the test

You can carry on if you make a mistake during your driving test. If you make a mistake which means you’ve failed, your driving examiner will direct you back to the driving test centre. The test will end early.

Test Result

After the practical test your examiner will tell you if you’ve passed and explain how you did. 

  • 15 or fewer driving faults

  • no serious or dangerous faults

If you fail, you can book another driving test straight away, but you cannot take it for another 3 working days.

Module 4 – Driver CPC (Practical Demonstration – Daily Checks)

You must have passed the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) part 2 test before you can book the Driver CPC part 4 test.

The test will need the following processes to be completed successfully:

  • load the vehicle following safety rules and to keep it secure

  • stop trafficking in illegal immigrants

  • assess emergency situations

  • reduce physical risks to yourself or others

  • do a walk-around vehicle safety check

The test is made up of 5 topics from the Driver CPC Syllabus. Maximum score is up to 20 points for each topic.
To pass you have to score at least 15 out of 20 in each topic area and have an overall score of at least 80 out of 100.

HGV Test Result

At the end of your test the examiner will inform you of a pass or fail.

If you fail, you can book another driving test straight away, but you cannot take it for another 3 clear working days
